Chapter Twenty

Khloe

We finished tai chi on the cliffs and I sank down on my lounger to wait for the dawn.

In a silly exaggerated way, Mom collapsed back against her chair and vigorously rubbed her flawless face with her towel. “I think I’m getting too old for this. I’m sweating and it’s not even sixty degrees.”

I laughed. “You’re not too old. You can still run circled around me when it comes to balancing your energy.”

“That’s will, not pep,” she announced in a cute-cute way, and I tensed, knowing a TMI comment about my father was soon to follow. “Your dad runs full steam day and night. It’s hell trying to figure out a way to keep up with him. It isn’t fair. He doesn’t work out. His diet is horrible, and he drinks all he wants. There he is, perfect health. He looks even better than he did in his twenties and he was hot as sin then. And he’s go, go, go, but then he doesn’t have fluctuating hormones, night sweats—menopause is a bitch, dear—he doesn’t even have low-T and he’s over seventy.”

Low T—I stifled a laugh, banished the thought of what that implied in the context of my parents, and hid my pink cheeks behind my towel. “You don’t have to keep up with Dad. He loves you exactly as you are.”

Her smile was youthfully pretty set in a face that was sixty-three. “I just want to stay as vibrant and alive as Alan.”

“You are, Mom. Dad adores you. You’re everything to him.”

Everything to him…my thoughts wandered to Damon and those words held new meaning to me. With all that I am, I’m yours, he’d said to charm me into letting him come to Pacific Palisades earlier than planned. It was like something my dad would say to Mom—heart slaying—and twelve hours later it still sent flutters to my stomach. I never thought I’d find for me what my parents had.

And oh my. Before dusk he’d be here. I hadn’t figured out a way to deal with that and my family. Though I supposed I didn’t really have to. Damon showing up on our doorstep would pretty much clarify things, but I wondered if perhaps a bit of a heads-up for my folks was in order before then.

I shook my head. No, that was too much discussion too early on a busy day. If I told Mom even the minimum of facts, she’d want to talk for hours and know everything.

My mom’s voice rambled in my ears with accolades for my dad, and I pulled my attention back to her. Chrissie’s smile glowed as she poured our coffee. “Alan’s everything to me. I’m the lucky one.” She crinkled her button nose. “But that doesn’t mean it’s not hell trying to keep pace with him.”

I rolled my eyes. Way to step on your own wonderful moment, Mom. I took my coffee mug and curled my legs beneath me, turning so I faced her better.

“Do you need a blanket?” she asked, rummaging in the wicker chest for her afghan.
